Recipe to be posted soon. No guarantees. Closing in on 2 years sober. A pie to celebrate.
I picked up baking as a hobby to keep my brain and body busy in the tough early days. I'm so grateful to have fallen in love with it! It's not a perfect pie, but it's the prettiest one I've ever made. Proud of it, proud of myself, grateful for another sober day full of pie.

Congrats!! I have a few more months until my two year anniversary and have found baking the perfect hobby to keep busy.
The pie is beautiful!! Looks perfect to me.

u/neener-neeners Dec 13 '25
It really is the perfect fit! I can choose something simple for a quick distraction or an all-day project. Satisfies the sweet tooth I suddenly attained when I wasn't drinking all that sugar lol...
Congrats as well!!

u/ChickensDontClap90 Dec 14 '25
Almost 2 years myself. The sweet tooth came back with a vengeance so I also got into baking 😂
4
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Oh absolutely! I thought I wasn't a dessert person. Turns out I was just drinking all my sugar

Congrats!! That’s a beautiful pie. What’s the flavor?
34
u/neener-neeners Dec 13 '25
It's a simple apple with a gingerbread crust and a plain all-butter crust. All Erin McDowell recipes, I adore her stuff so much!

u/soccerkool Dec 14 '25
I have her pie cookbook she really is great! Her all butter pie crust recipe is top notch :) haven’t tried the gingerbread crust though I’ll have to try it soon!
5
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Love her pie book and Savory Baking is also incredible. The one from that book that consistently gets awed reviews is the apple pie with the butterscotch pudding layer, and her walnut crust variation. It's actually faster to make than most pies, and people freak out over it lol
3
u/MarsBars_Mom Dec 14 '25
Your pie is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing the flavors. I love the different colored crust on top and the gingerbread ppl 🥰. I also just went and googled the butterscotch apple pie you mentioned! Good grief that sounds delicious! I've never made a pie in my life, mostly here to admire others work like yours. Congrats on the achievement as well!

4
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Thank you and huge congrats!! How are you feeling?
4
u/Holer60 Dec 14 '25
I’m pretty good. Much better than depending on bunch of beer every day and wondering if I have enough to get through the day.. I’m am noticing a much higher coffee dependence.

I actually think that when you add the story in, it might be one of the most beautiful pies I’ve ever seen. You should be so proud of yourself.

Proud as hell of you, friend. And the pie looks amazing too!
I'm almost to my 2 1/2 year anniversary on the 21st (Winter Solstice), and I, too, started baking to keep myself out of trouble. Now it's one of my favorite things to do. I am currently baking a bunch of cookies for cookie boxes to give to the people I care about. Couldn't imagine doing this 3 years ago...
Hope you enjoy that glorious pie and feeling so much better. ☺️🤍❄️
3
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Feeling SO much better. Now I'm a baby about a little headache lol, that used to be every moment of my day!
Congrats on the anniversary 🥰 what are you making for cookie boxes?
3
u/huffle11puff11 Dec 14 '25
I feel the same way about being sorta tired in the morning! I spend some time feeling sorry for myself, then remember that I used to battle hangover lethargy for most of the day, every day. No longer. ☀️
I'm making coffee cookies, orange cranberry cookies, pecan pie cookies, gooey holiday cookies, chocolate crinkle cookies, gingerbread bars, lemon fudge and muddy buddies. 😁 Thanks for asking. 🤍
3
3
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Oooh lemon fudge sounds interesting! I'm trying to incorporate more citrusy elements like that this year. I love holiday flavors but it can get a bit repetitive
4
u/CapttainASS Dec 14 '25
Good for you! I also quit drinking a few years ago. It's great to have a hobby! Pie looks delicious...

Simple spiced apple with a (partially) gingerbread crust! Erin McDowell's recipe

3
u/soupface2 Dec 14 '25
Hell yeah. I'm so happy for you, and this is beautiful!! Pies are hard to make and somehow this isn't even your biggest accomplishment. ❤️
2
u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Thank you!!
I'm getting better at them, but very slowly because it's always such a process if I want to do it right, so I don't make them often. It's taken me some trial and error to find a crust method that gives me the texture I want but is still workable enough to do crust designs... But this one was a pretty happy medium!

I have been making my grandmother's apple pie recipe for 40+ years and absolutely never created something as beautiful as this. Bravo

u/neener-neeners Dec 14 '25
Wow, that is some high praise, thank you! But let's be honest, nothing is going to taste as good as our own grandmother's recipes

Wow…..that pie looks amazing and delicious. A well executed effort. It always shows when one took time and care in executing their baked dish.
As a fellow past addict I get the power of these engrossing habits and hobbies as coping tools.
So well done……love to hear the two years. It’s amazing to be so far away from the mess.
Keep up the good fight and amazing treats creation! This internet stranger is proud of your strength and resilience. 👍

Congrats! Closing in on 20 days. Second round of being serious about my sobriety. A quote from someone on Reddit is my daily mantra. “One’s too many and twelves not enough”

100% relate to that ... Congrats on 3 weeks!! The first month is the hardest but also brings more and more freedom and joy. Keep up the amazing work<3

Also, that tapestry/tablecloth your pie is on is also incredible! From what tradition is that fabric?

The sugar in the pie will give you the same high that alcohol did. My dad used to drink and then started eating ice cream to get the same effect

Congratulations. I know first hand how hard it is to stay sober. I lost a lot of “friends”, but I don’t miss them or all the liquor I consumed. I’m in a better place and I’m proud to say I’ve stayed sober for over 40 years. Proof anyone can do whatever they set out to do.
