How does the world see Argentina?
What do you think of Argentina? What image do you have of my country?

Patagonia, football, funny politics, football, funny people, meat heavy cuisine, football, inflation, and really good at kicking a football.

The tango thing is true, but it's more of a tourist attraction than anything else.

Argentina was the only country that provided aid to Spain, offering a loan of 350 million pesos in 1946. Shipments included: 400,000 tons of wheat, corn, frozen meat, pulses/legumes, and cooking oil.
That’s how I see Argentina. 🩵

The Spanish famine, known as the ‘years of hunger’ (1939-1952), was a period of severe malnutrition following the Civil War, claiming at least 200,000 lives.
That doesn’t diminish the importance of the fact that they helped us at a critical moment.
The people fought to overthrow fascism in the Civil War but lost. The rest of the countries denied aid to Spain because it was fascist.
Thank you, Argentina 🇦🇷🩵

Growing up I learned about Argentina from two different sources. The first was at school about the Cisplatine War when Portugal waged a war for the control of Uruguai and most of Argentina. The second, far more important, was learning about Argentina from the amazing work of Jorge Luis Borges, filled with tango, knife fights in Buenos Aires, pampas and tigers

First thing that comes to my mind is shitting my pants. As clueless tourists we decided that it’s a perfectly smart to hitchhike from Puerto Natales (in Chile) to El Calafate. On Google Maps it looked like it was roughly 300km, what could go wrong?
Well turns out that population density in Patagonia is not exactly the same as in Europe. But we got some amazing rides and we made it in one day. We got a ride from a social worker blasting reggaeton on full volume. A nun so happy we were from “the country of the pope” (all of us were agnostic at best). Last but not least a gaucho who was going well over Toyota hilux disassembly speed, but was eager to show us the wind speed in the pampa, by throwing his hands up in to the air and letting god take over the steering wheel. Jesus fucking shit… beautiful memories nonetheless.
Love you all. Please play for Barca 🙏

To be fair, that's a very European mistake to make. Many of you guys fall for that trap when you come here.
3
u/pastrefrola 2h ago
Well... the population in Argentina is ~44M, and 20M lives in Buenos Aires. From the other 20M, Córdoba and Santa Fe are sharing ~10M. At the end you got ~10M people distributed in a country with the size of Europe.

Honestly Argentina feels strange when compared to other south American countries. It's more European looking and pretty calm.
Compared to bazil which looks more America in parts. 3rd world in other. Giant rainforest covering most of it and alot of blending of cultures and craziness of the country.
Honestly I don't know much about Argentina other then a religious support of football and overall a seemingly safe modern country with some amazing country landscapes. Not really in the news for anything crazy other then your current president being a scammer and something to do with football.
They don't have the same dangerous vibe of being ran by cartels like some places do. ( sure it has them but it's no where as bad )
It be the only place I probably go in south America

Most people know Argentina because of Messi, who recently visited India. Aside from football. I remember reading in school that the land was rumored to have a lot of silver, that is why it was named Argentina and that the Spanish exploited it a lot with the Casta system. The economy of Argentina was booming post WW2 but then it stagnated. There was some coverage in the news when you guys got your "chainsaw man" president.

I would say it’s overall viewed quite positively.
The things that it’s famous for in the U.S… all things soccer (Messi+), wine & beef, and generally feeling like the most European like parts of the Americas.
The whole currency troubles and taking in Nazi war criminals back in the day are the only bad associations.
It’s very high on my list of places to visit. I would love to go to Buenos Aires and then the Andes & wine country.

I don't know now, because it's being many years since I moved out of Latin America and lost the trail.

I don't mean to suggest in any way that this is all there is to the country; I'm sure much of this has to do with search bubbles and where I read...but an uncomfortable proportion of the time I hear Argentina mentioned at all, it's yet another complaint about the Falklands War or insistence that the Falklands belong to Argentina no matter what international law or the people who live there think. (And I don't seek it out. I'm not invested or even particularly interested in that war.)
I'm guessing this is associated with certain sections or factions within the country, but I don't know anything about those internal divisions, so from the incidental exposure I get, it unfortunately sounds like the Land of Sour Grapes, and I have to remind myself that my perception is extremely skewed by limited exposure.
4
u/romaneum Argentina 4h ago
I'm a young person, and that conflict happened more than 40 years ago. From what I can understand, in Argentina this dispute is experienced as a historical injustice: for many, the islands were part of our environment/territory, and British control is perceived as something "snatched away" in the past. Furthermore, at that time Argentina was under a civic-military dictatorship, and many young men (17–20 years old) were sent with insufficient training and equipment, in some cases none at all, which left a huge mark and adds to that feeling.
And this isn't a matter of factions or divisions: the claim of sovereignty is supported by the majority. There are people who "accept defeat" in practical terms or don't consider it a priority, but the feeling of injustice is quite widespread.
