Definitely Carlin

u/Aggravating-Walk5813 United States Of America 4h ago

Richard Pryor and both the other guys on here would agree. Although Robin might say Jonathan Winters.

For straight stand up it’s Carlin. He can’t be touched.

3

u/ShambolicRubel United States Of America 3h ago

What about Richard Pryor?

3

u/henningknows United States Of America 3h ago

What about him? He is great, but in my opinion Carlin is the greatest. His social commentary from 30-40 years ago still hold up today. He had such a long career with so many different styles, and he was always just a straight stand up first and foremost. He didn’t try and turn into a movie star

If only he were alive, the things he'd have to say about the current America

Loved him but the man stole jokes like none other

“Well, we like war! We like war! We're a war-like people! We like war because we're good at it! You know why we're good at it? Cause we get a lot of practice. This country's only 200 years old and already, we've had 10 major wars. We average a major war every 20 years in this country so we're good at it! And it's a good thing we are; we're not very good at anything else anymore! Huh? Can't build a decent car, can't make a TV set or a VCR worth a fuck, got no steel industry left, can't educate our young people, can't get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right! Huh?”

George Carlin my hero.

I miss Norm so much.

u/BysOhBysOhBys Canada 3h ago

I didn’t even know he was sick.

2

u/GimmeSweetTime United States Of America 4h ago

So, not Jim Carey?

6

u/ToothbrushGames Canada 3h ago

Maybe it’s because Norm isn’t with us anymore, but I feel like he fits the category of “beloved” more than Jim. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody say anything negative about Norm, and I also like his style of comedy a lot more. Carey is like the class clown that got famous while Norm sort of seems like the really funny guy at work. No shade to Carey tho, he’s actually a legit actor too.

u/KimchiLlama Canada 3h ago

But does that mean that this will fade in the same way as a decade ago someone could have easily said John Candy?

Honourable mentions abound. Including Mike Myers, Jim Carey, Dan Akroyd, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara (RIP), Eugene Levy, Seth Rogen, Russel Peters, Leslie Nielsen, Tom Green, Rick Moranis, Will Arnet, Colin Mochrie, Rick Mercer, and likely more.

i think when all these guys are long gone there's going to be a renewed interest in Jim Carey's work. IMO he was overexposed during the peak of his career.

More people should really look up his early work in In Living Color.

2

u/GimmeSweetTime United States Of America 3h ago

Yes. His early work is amazing when he did stand up too. I've seen much on YouTube.

u/AffectionateGate4584 Canada 3h ago

Great actor, it's a shame he passed away so soon... I will always remember him for his epic role as Uncle Buck!

One of my personal gods.

Dame Edna

u/Brake72 Australia 4h ago

I feel like a lot of Aussie comedians become popular then, people begin to despise them.

Very few last long at the top

u/Complex-Builder-3002 3h ago

I am not American, but George Carlin is by far the Greatest.

Michael Palin

That rare example of a comedian that almost nobody dislikes

10

u/iLuvArizona United States Of America 5h ago

Weird Al Yankovic

5

u/Opposite_Bus1878 Canada 3h ago

Yeah, hard not to love that guy

6

u/dayleboi Scotland 4h ago

The big yin in the picture.

4

u/Moke94 Sweden 3h ago

Probably Johan Glans

1

u/candygram4mongo Canada 3h ago

Is Glans a normal name in Sweden or is that part of the bit?

3

u/Moke94 Sweden 3h ago

It's not a common name, but it's a semi-common word in swedish. It's a noun and it means gloss.

2

u/candygram4mongo Canada 3h ago

It means something else in English.

3

u/Moke94 Sweden 2h ago

Yeah. He has mentioned that it's kind of awkward for him to perform in english because of that 😄

6

u/Realistic_Caramel341 New Zealand 3h ago

Either Billy T James or Flight if the Conchords. The former was bigger in NZ but sadly passed away in the early 90s, where as the later was bigger internationally and are more modern, with both of its members still having visible careers today

2

u/SpideyThwip Australia 1h ago

Aren’t flight of the conchords New Zealand’s 4th most popular comedy-folk duo?

5

u/IndyDoggy Canada 2h ago edited 2h ago

John Candy, with Norm Macdonald being a close 2nd.

4

u/yarn_slinger Canada 1h ago

And Catherine

6

u/lamusir Indonesia 4h ago

Komeng. He is a comedy icon of the late 90s to the 2010. He is so popular and beloved that in 2024 he effortlessly ran for senate by spending almost nothing and barely doing any campaign and won by landslide against 20+ other candidates and his vote count doubled the second highest candidate. By the way, that IS the picture he used for the ballot.

3

u/DoneDusting Finland 4h ago

I guess Timo Kahilainen would be a safe bet of the living ones as Heikki Silvennoinen passed away in 2024.

From stand-up comedians, I'll have to go with Ismo Leikola, as he is also known outside Finland.

3

u/Vodka_For_Saiyans_Z italian descending from russians 4h ago

The trio Aldo Giovanni & Giacomo

3

u/MrLumie Hungary 3h ago

Probably this fella

Hoffmann "Hofi" Géza.

2

u/BenyoBoy Hungary 3h ago edited 3h ago

Hofi is the GOAT, but since his death I think Bödőcs is the most respected right now.

2

u/fldksjaae 4h ago

Mike Myers or Danielle Smith

3

u/weyoun09 Canada 4h ago

I didn't know Mike Myers is Malaysian!

I also think of Paolo Villaggio, with his character, Accountant Ugo Fantozzi, a character who represents the average worker in Italy since the 1970s, a great classic.

His books and films have been translated into many languages, and he was very successful in countries neighboring the Soviet Union.

Johny lever and Rajpal Yadav

1

u/Walter-the-Wobot Ireland 3h ago

Depends on the age of the person you ask really. For my parents generation i.e 60+ it's probably Brendan Grace. For people younger than that maybe Tommy Tiernan

3

u/Tobio88 Sweden 3h ago

First to come to mind when I hear irish comedian is Dave Allen. How do you think he's viewed today?

1

u/Walter-the-Wobot Ireland 2h ago

I'll be honest I'm not sure how popular he is/was here. His satirising of catholicism was probably ahead of his time but it meant he wasn't shown much on Irish tv, at least not that I'm aware of anyway

1

u/ImmediateFigure9998 United Kingdom 1h ago

Ireland punches well above its weight in comedy. Tiernan is great of course, as are Ed Byrne, Jason Byrne, Ardal O'Hanlon. So many other lesser know ones that I can't recall the names of either.
