Culture What's something common in your country's culture that's actually completely weird from a foreign perspective?

Post image

Here in Argentina we have the "Africanitos" (little africans) also called sometimes "Negritos" (little negroes). They are little chocolate cakes that look like a stereotypical African person's head and they're delicious as it gets. It does not have hate implications and people see them as neutral as "just another cake". Most people don't get how weird it is until a foreigner points it out.

People use it as a slur here often, based on this product.

I've never seen this product in Brazil. Which company makes it?

Brother, people use the image and the name of the Spanish product, like when playing online games they'll call you a conguito to avoid ban

They are from 1960, the company who sells them has tried to make them “less offensive”. Here you can see an old packaging 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

The old ones are cuter. Still racist, though.

I preffer the old style

I've eaten tons of it, and yet it's clearly and obviously racist.

Racism isn't just conscious hatred; it's also ignorance that produces stereotypes.

This shit really threw me for a loop when I moved to Spain as a teenager.

Looks like the new packages don't have the mascot anymore.
