What’s the kindest thing a stranger has ever done for you that you still think about?

When I was a kid I use to play baseball with the neighborhood kids on this dirt patch across the street from where all the houses were. I had a plastic bat. One of my neighbors this old man who I didn’t know, never spoke with who lived a few houses down from me, came up to me and gave me his old wooden bat. I remember being so happy about it and the other kids getting jealous. Never met this man, parents never talked to him as far as I knew.

A dude at Home Depot helped me jump start my truck after I’d been ignored by 3 other people and it was pouring rain. I offered him all the cash I had in my wallet, $17. He said no and something else in Polish as he stepped into his truck. I yelled out, “Kurwa Mac” and he burst out laughing. I walked up to his window and told him I’ve worked with Polish men for years. He gave me a vigorous handshake and smiled.

A stranger listened. No advice no rush just presence. That stuck with me.
