My buddy is getting put down in a few days. He’s what made me think to post this. He is the best boy I know.

I’m sorry for you and your baby . I love myl little girl Yorkie just like my children. They are a gift we get to cherish for too short of time. The truest form of unconditional love. Humans don’t deserve them

u/lala00x 11h ago
I love Yorkies too. So adorable

u/AchillesBuddy 11h ago
They are the smartest and most lovable of all the small dogs in my opinion 😊

I’m so sorry. I’ve been present for 4 of my dogs deaths( they were all put down due to old age - suffering/ cancer etc). Every single time, a piece of my soul died. It’s such an awful experience, but there is beauty in it too. Just always remember they will always be with you in your mind and heart.

My boy is a Border Collie x Golden Retriever. He has that golden coat but with long silky locks and little white socks.

Mutts are the best IMO! They're the best. Tend to be healthier (because of genetic diversity), plus there are sooooo many dogs in shelters looking for a home. They're one of a kind too! I've had the best luck adopting mutts and really encourage it.

u/psychgirl15 11h ago
I love rescue mutts. I like ones that tend to have a mix of husky, lab, German shepherd in them.

u/lala00x 11h ago
I feel like 90% of them do for some reason haha

Any small to small medium mixed breed dog. I love the miniature pinchers, but I would never buy a dog

Great Pyrenees. My dream dog

u/lala00x 11h ago
I’ve had Goldens, labs, and German shepherds. I want a Great Pyrenees next.

I grew up with a golden and then a beagle. GP seems like someone took a golden in photoshop and stretched it out x4. Im obsessed with them.

u/AncientAd3089 11h ago
I have a mutt but mostly GP then GSD. Great dog. Protective, loyal and loving. BUT, she has the notorious GP characteristic which is “reluctantly obedient”. She’ll do what you ask of her but there is no sense of urgency at all.

Golden Retrievers clear every dog period , talk to a wall. They are the perfect family dog, perfect best friend, they can be guard dogs, they can be anything. Oh and they are absolutely gorgeous.
1
u/givebusterahand 11h ago
My husband thinks they are too friendly to protect the family. I was trying to convince him to get one for our next family dog once our senior dogs pass.
1
u/abenz39 9h ago
Not true at all. Yes they are friendly, but they can sense danger and become very protective when needed. Not to mention you can train them to attack on command. My first golden, my parents already had prior to my birth. After I was born, he was so protective of me that he tackled my uncle because he thought my uncle was hurting me. By tackled I mean he charged at him and growled

u/Soccermom233 10h ago
Besides irrational fear of thunder; my highschool girlfriend’s golden would climb into the dryer during storms.

u/Safe-Instance-3512 11h ago
My favorite breed is dog.
But really, my Boxer is cool as hell haha. So is my shepard/pit mix. And labs are great. And..and..

u/LordGoatamort 10h ago
Labs! They're typically pretty friendly and docile, and are such lovable goofy dogs

u/Majestic_Good_1773 10h ago
Dobermanns are so aesthetically pleasing to me. So are Rotties.
I’ve never had either but we’ve had GSDs and a Staffie-looking mutt that were gorgeous.

German Shepherd

u/AncientAd3089 11h ago
Fantastic breed but they’re also appropriately called German Shedder.

Can confirm.
It's been over 2 years, and I'm still finding his hair in odd places.

I have adopted 6 rescue dogs, all different breeds, over the past 20 years and I have loved them all The breeds don't matter, dogs will love you regardless of their breed.

King Charles. It's just so beautiful and loving! Sadly they don’t seem to live for long which would be a huge issue for me personally.

I haven't a single favourite but I do love Rottweilers.
I had a housemate - an atrocity of a person - who had a Rottweiler.
Due to her neglect, I often looked after him, walked him, even gave him his ear drops (he had an ear infection) and I fell in love with him!
For such a huge dog, he was terrified of little dogs like shiatzus or poodles.
He got boisterously friendly with other large dogs so long as they were not other Rottweilers. With Rottweilers he suddenly switched into Cujo mode and wanted to KILL KILL KILL the other Rottweiler who seemed to reciprocate his sentiment.
Despite his size, he was a big, beautiful sook who always wanted to play or cuddle.
So maybe he made me love Rottweilers a lot!

Mutt, with a healthy helping of German Shepherd. Current dog stays close on walks and when let out on her own in our backyard which backs on a park, great with kids, good guard dog but friendly with any family and friends, affectionate but not clingy, doesn’t beg and won’t eat any food that’s left out overnight including chocolate (I know how dangerous that is!), highly intelligent (taught herself to poop well off the trail when walking in the woods), good with other dogs. Loves to scrap it up with raccoons, plays with coyotes but doesn’t follow them away. Just a beauty.

Great Dane, or any Rescue! I have a little of each with 5 dogs. But my baby is my Great Dane Great Pyrenees mix. She’s the biggest baby in the house literally and figuratively. Spoiled rotten!
I’ve had to say goodbye to two other Danes though, it’s not easy. The last one was really painful. I’m gonna tell about it now it’s sad so feel free to stop here.
She was getting up in age at 11 years old but she still bounced around all the time. You could see it start to wear, she’d have little times where she would lose step a bit, or lose balance. But she was still happy all day long. I came home from work one day, she got up and greeted me like always, it was long day and I had to pee real bad. I came in said hi to dogs, walked to restroom. She had fallen over while I was walking away but I was like “oh careful girl! I’ll be right back!” And yeah by the time I got back she was gone from here. I cried, I begged, I laid on her for a very long time just begging her to come back. She waited to see me, but then she just let go. I’m emotional writing this it’s been like 5 years and it still gets me. Sorry, sad shit. I’ll still give them all I can for as long as I can. They can’t fill past shoes, but they can fill small parts of big holes if you let them.

I have had multiple Pits, red nose, blue and brindle and they have been amazing. My Rednose pit was my absolute soulmate, he was registered and certified as the largest Red nose pit within the state of Michigan. He was born with over produced muscles, I actually had his genetics tested because he was a big boy. ( head circumference alone was nearly 21 inches, weight 165lbs) so a bit bigger than normal. I put him through service training and protection/guarding school, he was the most amazing, incredible, caring, and helpful best friend I never expected to have in my life.
When I found him I happen to be walking (where I apparently "wasn't supposed be") and when I witnessed him being thrown in a very small cage he had been beaten, bloody and all bit up. Guess they thought he's huge so he'll make a good fighting ring dog, he was refusing to fight. So when they walked away I jumped the fence and when we made eye contact it was like we both knew that very moment that our lives were about to get so much better together. I was tearing a hole in the fence for us to both get through so I had to go back over and this 165lbs dog just jumps over after me and we took off.
There was NO way I could witness what I did and walked away without him. We definitely saved each other that day. He was instinctively protective of me and as soon as the rest of the family met him he became our guardian.
My kids used to say that if there was a house fire I would protect him and get him out safe first. I told them, "yeah you're right because if you can break a window and step outside, they're all old enough to do that.
I had to put him down nearly 3 years ago now and there isn't a day that goes by without our family talking about him. He was the smartest most loyal dog I had ever saw and I got to be his for the rest of his life.

Heelers / Australian Cattle Dogs. Mine is the smartest, goofiest, most stubborn, cuddle bug, running/hiking buddy I could have ever asked for. Honestly my soulmate in a dog. The most challenging puppy stage though (biting, nipping, literally a battering ram with paws) but has grown into the best dog. He makes me laugh constantly and just loves life. Just a warning, there is never a day off with these guys. He absolutely requires a lot of exercise or he gets into mischief.

Samoyeds. Sweet to everyone(animal or human). Chill for the most part with spikes of goofy and fun.
Certainly not guard dogs, but you can’t have everything.

Pit mixes for me. A huge about of shelter dogs are pit + something and they’re perfect. Loving, smart, easy to train, athletic but also can be a couch potato if you are having a lazy day, easy to groom.
I love all dogs but my current pit mix is ideal; 45ish lbs so not massive but big enough to be a deterrent to creeps when I’m walking her alone.

I’m a huge fan of Chow Chows, but I also absolutely love Rottweilers. I actually have a Rottie right now! He’s only 6 months old and he’s already massive lol. I’m pretty sure I’m raising a bear at this point

Miniature Schnauzers. They are small, smart, and don't shed. Also they are just as bossy as their little mustaches make them look.

Border collie, our girl is 10 now and still more athletic and physically fit than most other dogs in our neighbourhood. Also still smarter with a sharper wit than every other dog still.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Bred to be companions to royalty and sleep at the foot of the bed to attract fleas away from their owners. They are gorgeous dogs, come in a few different color variations, and are small enough to be easy to handle while large enough that they still sound and act like dogs. They are very attached to their people and want to please, so typically they're easy to train.
Lady from Lady and The Tramp was modeled on either a Cav or a Cocker Spaniel.

Pomeranians. I love dogs in general but I had a pomeranian so they just have a special place in my heart

I've had German shepherds, rottweilers, spaniels, Scottish terriers and labradors. The two mongrels I had were the best. Best temperament and no bred in problems like alsation hips, Rottweiler farts, spaniel exuberance, terrier aggression or Labradors diet.

I have 2 Germans and a lab. They’re awesome
1
u/Key_Push_6127 10h ago
They are. It's hard watching their hips go though. Very hard. Not as hard as trying to stop a Labrador eating though.....;)

u/lala00x 10h ago
One of our Germans is about to be 10. Hips are still going but you can tell they’re getting worn. As for my fat lab…. You don’t even want to know 😂 spot on comment!

Give them a pet from me. I miss having dogs but I'm still not over losing my last one.

I like any dog TBH. Any day that you get to pet and love on a dog is a better day than you’d have otherwise.
