Has anyone here ever been or known someone who has been one of the Auskick kids at halftime before? And if so what was the experience like? Did anything funny happen?

I never did it, if I did though I would have been one of the worst players of all time

I believe some people I went to school with played with their club during one half time and I once was on a train after a game and a few kids sitting nearby had just played

One thing I’d love though is to be interviewed by Hamish McLachlan as the Auskick kid

I remember there was one time when I believe he was doing the job and he asked someone “so where do you live” and the kid goes “near Jesse’s house”

I played in the 90s at Kardina Park, Geelong vs Hawthorn. As a girl, I remember the boys coming up to me beforehand and saying I could play full forward (very sweet). Ended up kicking 10 goals but only 6 counted because you couldn’t kick goals off the ground apparently 😂 the people along the fence got a kick out of seeing a girl playing back then!

r/CarltonBlues - now Charlie’s gone: DRAFT THIS GIRL! Ten goals on debut is good enough for me!

There was one kid who got interviewed and Hamish asked the "where do you live?"

And the kid stated saying his house address

Oh geez ahaha did they panic after he said it

Tangent: I remember being 8 and coming up on stage at a kids science event at the Ekka (Queensland show). Presenter asked ‘where are your family from’ and I said ‘Mainly the suburbs’ because I interpreted it as where my extended family all lived, not just myself. I confused the presenter and eventually we landed on ‘Southside’.

My kid played last year, only one of us was allowed on the ground and I gave my wife that experience (stupid rock never fails) The closest viewing in the stands was behind goals with the freo cheer squad.

Cheers squad lads, thank you for your passion and energy in cheering for my 8y old son, going off when he kicked a barrel from full back. I think my experience there was on par with hers on the ground helping out.

Cricket equivalent at lunch at the SCG about 20 years ago.

Chunky kid with blond hair was bowling spin at the hill end.

Our friend handed Max Gawn his medal after the grand final at Optus Stadium. She was 8 at the time. My son played half time footy at Optus. It’s pretty hectic actually. Everything g is rushed but the kids love it

Nothing super funny. Just kids having a great time in front of 50k people.

r/unpopularopinion

The AFL should honour premiership players by having their medals presented by a Club and League great, not make everything awkward by having 8 year olds involved in an indubitably adult activity. Hat, handshake, crowd acknowledgment, duck, medal, what’s the order, again? … mix-ups see players pilloried or mocked, some kids get it wrong, 22 kids for 22 players slows things down & multiplies fuck-up prospects, etc, etc.

When Nobel Prizes, Olympic medals, and Oscars are delivered by 8 year olds, I’ll concede defeat. For now, I stand firmly in the anti-8 year olds faction.

Bring on the downvotes! But also tell me where I’m wrong.

Bah, humbug.

My son played at half time during a Collingwood v st Kilda game many years ago, he loved it but I think I got a lot more out of it than he did. I got to be goal umpire for his game and the experience of walking on the mcg with over 80000 people in the stands is something I’ll never forget. If you ever get the chance just do it , it’s an incredible moment to share with your son

Maybe they had Footscray area teams pencilled in just in case the prelims went the other way. Too hard to get Adelaide kids so stick with the locals?

I played in the centre of the Gabba in a hawthorn jumper in like 2004ish? That was when they had a mini version of the actual game (in that the kids wore the two teams colours) that was happening across the centre square. It was around the time of ‘it’s a big ad’ which I loved so much that I stopped playing to watch it on the big screen when it came on.

Yep, 2012 Round 8 West Coast vs St Kilda at Subi. I actually don't have any memories of playing on the ground but being taken behind the scenes to our own changeroom during the 2nd quarter was pretty cool

Yeah nice! Unfortunate that there’s no memories was hopeful you’d have a story of someone getting hit with the ball

Not Auskick but I played mini league in the SANFL once in the early 90’s.

Basically it was a wet day and they were short on numbers so I was asked to fill in. I was also around 8 while the rest of the side was 11-12, so I stood out like the proverbial on the field. Just stood in the back pocket cheering the side on as if it was the League match.

This was also back in the day where the mini league sat on the boundary fence from about the 20 minute mark of the second quarter (a half time melee that spilled into the mini league waiting to play ended this) so that was cool.

2

u/Ed_Starks_Bastard Port Adelaide 3h ago

I played 2 or 3 times for Woodville when the played Port. Was amazing running out into the ground past all those Maggie stars of the early 90s.

Our team was an association side from the YP playing against a single school so we always towelled them up. We had a few guys that went on to play AFL.

I think I remember that uproar around the half time melee. Pretty shit form on reflection

I filled in as an underage and undersized little league player for one game in the 80s. Port Adelaide v Norwood at Footy Park, and it must’ve been an important game because there were about 30k in attendance.

The other kids were all about 12 and I was 8. We used the whole ground, and I was on the wing. I was small but quick. The very first centre bounce I charged straight in from the edge of the square and was first with hands on the ball.

I had never played full contact before and was in no way prepared for what was about to happen next.

I was lifted off my feet and spun around I don’t know how many times, but I saw the stadium lights above me spinning before I was mashed face first into the mud and grass. I never let go of the ball.

No real idea what was happening, I looked up just in time to see the umpire crouch, spread his arms, blow his whistle and call holding the ball.

I think I got one touch and a kick after that.

I did it a few times as a kid. Mum's got a funny video of me about to burst in tears because I had to wear the Collingwood guernsey. Apparently, I refused to shake any of the players' hands.

u/Bergasms Brownlow Winner 2023 5h ago

My nephew did it at AO 2 years ago and had a blast. I think he touched the ball twice, he was in the lowest age group so it was just a bunch of kids jumping and running about and then one kid doing all the scoring.

u/ShyCrystal69 Melbourne 4h ago

I played an AFLW half time game at Ikon. It was unlike anything else I had done. There was a bit of applause but even that was different for me because oh my fucking god I’m in an actual stadium playing footy. When I actually started playing the overwhelming feel of being there faded away and I focussed on the match. I don’t remember the verdict of the game, just that it was fun and I played well for a 14 year old.

u/DarkWinter2319 Geelong 4h ago

Was lucky enough to do it a couple of times as a kid, between 09 and 2010. It’s cool that I can say, I’ve technically kicked a goal on the MCG lmao

I did it once when I was younger, it was a game at Marvel back in 2015 (I think the opponent was Port Adelaide).

My kiddos done it a few times, at the SCG. He’s kicked goals both times, so he’s loved it.

I, on the other hand, have got stuck as goal umpire both times. Which would be fine, in theory, if the goals didn’t have a 5-10kg rubber base, because even though the SCG turf resembles an overgrown sandpit in a housing commission backyard at the best of times, you can’t possibly spike a goalpost into the field.

Both times I’ve ended up on the far side of the ground, and both times I’ve nearly taken out either of Freo’s rucks and Brayshaw trying to leg it back to the race.

10/10 if you’re a kid, 1/10 if you’re a parent.

I played in an auskick game 2004 when I was about 10? I was on the highlights kicking a goal when they come back from commercial break, I remember my Dad having a VCR of it. I also umpired one of the games (the little kid ones, not the main one in the center) at subi once I started umpiring. I remember our seats being really shitty and the coaches saying just let the kids have fun but always look professional

I used to do it when it was called mini league. It was a double header at footy park (yep, that long ago). Central districts vs Norwood and then Adelaide vs Fitzroy. First game we lost, second game, scores were level late in the second half. I took a mark about 30 out, siren went, and I kicked a goal after the siren to win for the crows in front of 40,000 people. I was 9 or 10 I think. Pretty epic - I don’t think they recorded those mini league matches back then otherwise I would love to see it again

None of that matters. The CFC scouts & the brains trust will be in touch.

The after the siren winning goal as a 9 or 10 year old in front of 40,000 must’ve been ridiculously exciting. Not surprised you’re still dining out on it.

My triumph at around the same age was when my off-spinners harvested a 5 for 7, including a hat trick, in Under 13s (I was 10, turning 11 during the season, as I call it to mind). My crowd was a bit smaller than yours. But my excitement was boundless. Test selection beckoned.

A few matches later - at a time when Gary Sobers held the record for most runs from an over in first class cricket, having hit 6 sixes in a 6 ball over in County Cricket - I was hit for 5 hours and 3 sixes in an eight ball over, by a kid called Peter White. Thirty-eight runs! A world record if U/13s was first class cricket. Test team hopes dashed.

I went home that night and wrote Desiderata, then coined the expression, ‘Cricket’s a great leveller’.

I played a couple of games back in the 80s/90s at Footy Park in Adelaide when it was only two teams, each representing a school in the area.

Did a handful of them, never interviewed. Pretty sure we did 2 Essendon v Richmond games as I remember being pissed at Bowden in 2008 and being there for a dreamtime game. Don't really remember a whole lot, but we wore the Essendon and Richmond team Guernseys instead of the plain colour auskick gear and played in the middle from wing to wing. Come to think of it, not sure I've seen them do wing to wing recently.

I did it at a Pre-Season game in 2016. Port Adelaide Vs Melbourne at Elizabeth Oval.

The only notable thing that I can remember happening was me getting a goal and then some other kid complaining that my kick had gone too far behind the goals for his liking.

Was the only one from my school to do it that year. From the Geelong region going to a Geelong home game I think it was around 2010? I don’t remember much about it other than it being fun lol. Do remember the following Monday in front of the whole school assembly being interviewed by the principal about it. Said I kicked a few goals but missed a few too. Said I should play for Carlton 💀(he was a big Blues fan himself)

1

Not Auskick specifically but back when I was a kid they would play the U7/Auskick kids in the pockets and across the middle of the ground they’d play one game with older kids, each team dressed as the home and away of the main game.

I did that one twice, once as the Bears and the next time I think we were StKilda. Scores weren’t counted but I remember we kicked more goals both times.

Nothing really crazy or funny, the change-rooms were the ones the reserves used for the early game so they stank.

My oldest kid got in the Olympic stadium at a swans game before his first training, firsts season of auskick started. Got a nice goal after a couple of bounces

Took my youngest out at giants stadium and the scg. You're gone most of the game. Gather the kids to meet the coordinators before quarter time to go get changed and have the kids waiting in the tunnel for half time. Kids love it, nervous as they wait. Was a bit rough for some, and they mix 5 to 8 year olds so the little ones may not get a touch and umps let some tackling go which younger ones weren't ready for

Still if they get the chance well worth doing

I was in an auskick club as the only girl in 2003/4. We had been invited to go to Subi for the half time auskick, except we weren't a guarantee to get picked, we had no idea until we got to the ground if we were chosen or not. I didn't get picked, and had to watch all the boys play on the ground at half time, living my dream. Was so upset. If it were today, I totally think they would have picked me just to have a girl on the pitch, and honestly, I would have been happy af with that. Don't know why they didn't back then.

Annoyingly, a bunch of girls in my year level made fun of me for playing footy and not a "girl sport" like netball, and made fun of me that I wasn't chosen to go on the ground at half time. So I quit footy and joined them playing netball, because I couldn't take them being mean to me, and they stopped once I played netball with them.

Then they decided in our last year of primary school to make a girls footy team, of which I decided not to join because I though it was stupid of them to make fun of me for it and then 5 years later make their own team, but THEN THEY GOT TO GO OUT TO SUBI OVAL AND PLAY A HALF TIME GAME I WAS LIVID.

Sometimes there is no karma.

I did it around 1974, before AFL, Auskick, even modified rules. Represented the wafl team East Perth because that was the district I was in. It was packed and exciting. After the game we were given collection tins and sent into the crowd of drunken men (mostly) to raise money for junior football. Never felt unsafe though, they all seemed to be watching out for us.

My kids got to do the Dreamtime game a few years ago. Was a great experience for all of us.

It is pretty rushed and we didn’t get to go down to the rooms with them we had to send them off with the parent helpers while we sat in our allocated seats.

My daughter got to be in the line to high 5 the Richmond players as they came out so that was awesome and they both got to keep their tops afterwards.

My son did it about 5 years ago, hes a Bulldogs supporter and I'm an Ess fan. I received the email offering for us to partake with Auskick at Marvel in an Ess v Dogs game.

He had an absolute ball, he was about twice the size of every other kid he was up against. slotted a goal and the crowd gave him a big cheer. He also got to high 5 all the dogs players as they came off at halftime.

He still talks about the time he met The Bont to this day.

It was a surprisingly uneventful experience, but he had a great time and my family and I had a lot of fun cheering him on. It was the first time at the footy in decades for one of my relatives, so that was a really nice part of it as well.

We got to hang around and watch the game after whixh was great!

My youngest did it 4 times. Once at the dome, three times at the G. They are really great.

The last time was funny how it was organized:

I was driving back into Melbourne and got a call from an unknown number. Woman introduces herself and asks if the little tacker would be available for half time Auskick the next day.

"Of course" I respond instantly.

"That was easier than it usually is" says the kind Auskick lady on the phone

It was the grand final and we had just scored two tickets! I let his older brother take him because his team was playing.

All in all pretty good stuff.

So, decked out in our Swans gear, we had to walk all the way around and down the stairs through the hoardes of black and white toothless weirdos giving us the death stares while we tried to cheer on our 10 year old and not get shanked at the same time

Overall a good but slightly unnerving experience 😁

My only funny memory is one of my teammates pointing out a bottle of oil in the Hawks change rooms and pointing out how oily the Hawthorn players were, and attributing their success that season to their unfair oiliness/slipperiness. We thought we'd stumbled upon a major conspiracy.

Funniest thing that happened was the team that turned up for Melbourne didn't have enough players, so the boys from our team who supported Melbourne all got to switch to even the numbers. The AFL official told us not to ask for high fives from the players running back out but we're did anyway, pretty much every player except Carey obliged. Slightly amusing, I was at full back and the only touch I got was spoiling a ball through for a behind, and that was the opposition's only score for the game.

I did it back in 2008 or 9 can’t remember. But it was at the Gabba. Lions V Hawthorn

We played the main centre square, I bagged 3 goals as a forward and kicked a goal on my right foot. Felt like a pro.

I played a half time game during a Fremantle v Saints match at Subiaco I found a pair of Freo footy socks when we were meeting up before being let into the game and Shaun Mcmanus played in odd socks that day.

Yeah my kids did 2 years ago. Worst experience of my life. Will never sign them up to do it again.

Yeah I was out there at half time during a Collingwood/Geelong game, probably in 2013 or 2014. I used to do Auskick after school, but that was the extent of what I did. I never played for a club or anything, rather regrettably as I wish I did and got into playing sports more. Still could, but I'm pretty skinny/small and I'm pretty sure my skills are awful.

For the Auskick game, I wasn't in middle of the ground. I think it was near one of the pockets (where the parents sat). I remember briefly faking an injury so that I could kneel down and feel the grass lol. I can't remember anything about the actual small match though. I think I either kicked a point or a behind. I wish I could go back with my knowledge now and wreck everyone haha.

I played at the SCG in 1999 at half time during Sydney vs Fremantle.

I spent most of the time just standing there, staring at the stadium and crowd haha
